2022 finally felt like we are getting back to normal after COVID. This year the tournament filled up by mid-April. We had great weather and a full tournament of 144 players for a great day of networking, golf, and a picnic. There was a 20-minute rain delay in the afternoon, but this was unable to damper the spirits of those that attended.

As usual, the event had two foursomes teeing off at each of the 18 holes. The Dixon Golf Challenge was on hole no. 5, the Closest to the Case prize on hole no. 16 and the Hole-in-One was located at hole no. 8, which offered a $10,000 prize to any golfer that manages to make hole-in-one. Unfortunately, the diligent hole-in-one volunteer judges (Tracy Santoro-Hayes Pumps, Megan Ambrose-UCONN, Jane LaMorte – Stafford, and Vanessa McPherson-Arcadis) did not report any big winners but did witness some close calls. We are always very appreciative of the time they gave to support our event.

This year’s Closest to the Case winner Jim Zanavich was awarded with a case of craft brewed beer from Nod Hill Brewhouse. We also had our traditional two holes for longest drive and two holes for closest to the pin prizes. This year we continued our new tradition providing gift bags filled with generous donations from our wonderful sponsors to our onsite photography. If you were there you probably met Mike Spring, from Suez, who graciously volunteered to take photographs and did a fantastic job. We appreciate him taking the time to attend our event and sharing photos.

This tournament is a key fundraising event for programs that the CWPAA participates in annually. The Tee Sponsorships are used to fund the Scholarship Fund, which offers scholarships to students who will be pursuing a college degree in the environmental related field. We are happy to announce we raised $3,800 for the CWPAA Scholarship Fund through tee sponsors that will be going to four students attending college this upcoming fall. This year’s Green Sponsorships were improved to increase support for Connecticut’s Operation Challenge Team, and we were able to set a record, raising $3,700 for the Operators Challenge Team. Additionally, a special thank you to all the attendees during the food festivities who purchased Win the Driver raffle tickets, raising an additional $1,475. This is much appreciated to help defray travel costs for the Operations Challenge Team. Overall, it was a fantastic day, and we are grateful to all of our tee and green sponsorships, all those who purchased raffle tickets, committee members, volunteers and attendees who were able to attend, making this event into a fun filled day.
